Wordless Wednesday 007: A traditional Khmer wedding

Posted by Sreisaat on November 04, 2009 @ Inside Cambodia

This is the wedding ceremony of my landlord's daughter. A traditional Khmer wedding ceremony is usually done over a 3day period. Nowadays, however, the ceremony is cut down to two days. Despite the shortened ceremony, it still is rife with rituals, elaborate costume changes not only of the bride but also of the groom and their attendants, and relatives, as well as the festive atmosphere and sumptuous feasts.

Here comes... Khmer Iggy and the bride

Oh, and the sister of the bride, too!Traditionally, Khmer weddings last for three days and are done at the bride's home. Nowadays, the ceremony is shortened to only one day. Our landlord's daughter's wedding, however, was held for two days (may kaya sila). Despite the shortened ceremony, it is still rife with elaborate rituals, costume changes (not only of the bride but also of the groom, their attendants, and their parents), and not to forget the food and merry-making! Media women to study women in media

Professional women broadcasters and documentary makers will gather in Cambodia shortly to examine the portrayal of women and their practical involvement in media. The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) will be holding its 33rd Biennial Conference in Phnom Penh from 17-21 November 2009. This year’s conference will be based on the two media strategic objectives of the Beijing Declaration and Plan for Action, which marks its 15th Anniversary in 2010.

Photo Hunt #11 - Delicious

Posted by Sreisaat On Sunday, January 06, 2008

Hi friends, I know I am late in posting my photo hunt entry for this week, so I apologise. Anyways, whenever I hear the word delicious, there is no denying that food is the first thing that comes to my mind! And in Cambodia there is no shortage of yummy food. Khmer cuisine, though unique on its own, is almost always likened to Thai food but without the spiciness. So this is my take for this week's photo hunt theme - delicious food!

Last year, I was assigned to work in the coastal town of Kep for several months. Kep is about 170kms from the capital of Phnom Penh and about 50kms from the Vietnam border. Kep is surrounded by the Gulf of Thailand and a large number of fishing boats venture out at night to catch fish and squid in the sea, and we eat the very same seafood in the local restaurant the next day -

Above are our favorites (me and my husband)- mok chaa mareth kchhay (fried squid with pepper) and bangkea chaa mareth kchhay (fried prawn with pepper). So whenever you are in Cambodia, plan a visit to Kep and head towards the crab market. Find Kim Ly's restaurant, they serve the best bangkea and mok chaa mareth in the whole of Kep!

And for those with adventurous taste buds, head to the Psah Thmey (Central Market) in Phnom Penh for a more exotic offering. Stir-fried bugs, anyone?

  11. The food looks delicious! Have YOU ever tried the bugs? Why is it so important to them to eat bugs or is it necessary? Where do they get so many bugs? Do they farm them? Surely they don't race around catching them.

  22. Katney Said,

It makes me want to find a Thai restaurant for tonight (We'd starve looking for a Cambodian one here.) I'll go for the prawns, though--hubby can have the squid. I have eaten bugs, though--long, long ago: fried grasshoppers and chocolate covered ants.
